Are you excited to spend a fun, relaxing, and transformative weekend away with Black gifted friends new and old?
2025 Retreat Theme:
Authenticity as a Practice of Freedom
Juneteenth each year commemorates the date in 1865 when enslaved Africans were informed of their freedom in the Deep South of the U.S. Wherever we may hail from across the African diaspora, Juneteenth weekend offers a potent opportunity for reflection on the meaning of freedom, particularly in this period of uncertainty in the U.S. and around the world. Amidst an array of pressing global and systemic issues, discussions of freedom often neglect the ways in which forces of injustice (e.g., racism and ableism) can also radically undermine our ability to simply be and express ourselves. Not only does this restricted expression of authenticity deprive us of personal satisfaction, it also deprives others of the transformative light hidden in our hearts.
This inaugural Our Wild Minds Retreat will invite Black gifted adults to reclaim this light and our right to wield it through three days of priceless community connection, adventure, relaxation, and creative visioning over Juneteenth weekend 2025. From the 6,000 square foot villa which will serve as our home base to the stunning vistas we will explore in the Catskill Mountains, this weekend promises to be an unforgettable experience. We hope that you will join us!

Hosts & Guest Practitioners
Kaitlin Smith
Founder, Our Wild Minds
Kaitlin Smith, MSW is a scholar, writer, and facilitator who founded Our Wild Minds to help Black gifted adults unleash their natural gifts through the power of community and raise awareness about what she has termed the gifted rainbow—a more expansive conception of giftedness that attends to various dimensions of social identity. Kaitlin is also a PhD candidate at Harvard where her research addresses the history of psychology and Africana Studies.
Ben Brown
Sound Healer and Massage Therapist
As a massage educator, sound practitioner, and visual artist, Ben Brown creates transformative wellness experiences supporting mental, emotional, and physical health. Ben pursues the intersection of mediums that provide a haven from social-emotional isolation and support our adaptive capabilities to self-soothe and heal. Much of his work comes from the impulse to create more space in the nervous system and body through vibrational frequencies that connect us to our ancestral wisdom and being.
Getting Here
By Air
We recommend flying into John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, NY and coordinating rideshare to our venue with fellow retreat participants (logistical coordination portal available post-registration).
By Car
Our retreat venue in the hamlet of Mountain Dale (and town of Fallsburg), NY is located a 90-minute drive from New York City, and is accessible via I-84 and I-87. The precise street address will be shared with registrants via email. Parking is limited at this location so indicate whether you need this at registration.
By Train or Bus
Our best recommendation is to take a train to New York Penn Station or bus to Port Authority Bus Terminal, both in New York City. We recommend coordinating rideshare with fellow retreat participants from John F. Kennedy International Airport which can be accessed via the E subway train.

Given the significant financial obligations to retreat venues and service providers that we take on to offer retreats, Our Wild Minds is unable to offer refunds for retreat registrants. We require that retreat registrants purchase travel insurance and strongly recommend plans that offer “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) coverage through which claimants can recover most or all of their investment in airfare and the retreat itself in the event of a cancellation for any reason (including a change of heart).
If you wish to assign your ticket to the retreat to another person, you may do so only with the express permission of Our Wild Minds which screens all retreat participants prior to allowing them to register to ensure an excellent experience for all present.

We require that all retreat registrants purchase travel insurance to ensure coverage in the event of unforeseen circumstances (e.g., trip cancellation/interruption, emergency medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation, baggage loss/delay, and travel delays due to unforeseen circumstances.) In addition, tickets for retreat are nonrefundable so the best option for someone is recover the cost of their trip should they need to cancel is to purchase a travel insurance plan that includes “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) coverage. Generally, CFAR plans must be purchased within 10-14 days of purchasing a retreat ticket or submitting a deposit.
Compare options relevant to people from your state / province / country at TravelInsurance.com.For planning purposes, keep the following in mind:
Standard Travel Insurance: Travel insurance generally costs between 5% and 10% of the amount you are insuring, and it reimburses 100% of your nonrefundable costs if you cancel your trip for a covered reason (e.g., a doctor-documented illness that prevents travel, or a death in the family). It also covers certain costs in the case of trip delay, trip interruption, and medical expenses should you get sick while traveling.
“Cancel for Any Reason” Option: You may also want to consider adding “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) coverage to your policy. CFAR coverage generally adds 40-50% to the cost of the policy and reimburses 50-75% of your insured trip cost if you cancel for a reason not covered under the standard policy. This allows you to cancel your trip for any reason, including if you simply change your mind, and still be reimbursed for a percentage of your nonrefundable costs. (Note: You are still reimbursed for 100% of covered costs if you cancel for a covered reason.) Finally, know that you must act quickly for CFAR: Check your policy for the deadline for adding the CFAR option. CFAR usually needs to be added within 10 to 14 days of your initial trip payment or trip deposit.
